Devlog #6 – The World Rewinds

In this devlog, we’re diving into one of Last Loop’s defining features — the world rewind mechanic. Forget reviving the player with a perk — this time, you’re rewinding reality itself.

World Rewind: Breaking Time

After experimenting with a few ideas, I’ve settled on a full world rewind system. When triggered, it pulls back the entire game state — not just the player, but everything:

  • Zombies revert to earlier positions and states

  • The player comes back to where they were — alive and restored

  • Ammo, health, and map changes are rolled back

  • It’s like the world blinks and undoes the last few seconds

Narrative Integration

The idea behind Last Loop is that time travel "caused" the apocalypse — and the more you rewind, the more reality breaks down. This mechanic ties directly into that concept.

Future versions of the rewind will include:

  • Physics glitches (objects jittering or freezing)

  • Distorted zombies (walking backward or acting out of sync)

  • Echoes of your past self showing up for a few seconds after a rewind

It’s not just about survival — it’s about unraveling the timeline.

Current Features

  • Rewind is triggered manually (keybind)

  • Stores a history of world states to rewind through

  • Player becomes invincible during the rewind

  • Enemies and objects visibly snap back to where they were seconds ago

  • Still performant even with lots of active zombies

In Progress / Planned

  • Add visual/audio feedback (glitches, rewind FX, distortion)

  • Hook the rewind to a perk purchase (Time Loop Tonic)

  • Set cooldowns or limited charges to avoid spamming

  • Possibly introduce “glitch anomalies” the more you use it

That’s all for now, Last Loop has officially broken the laws of time.

Next up: perks and the mystery box!
